Welcome to Deoksugung Palace!!
Deoksugung Palace is one of the five royal palaces that still remains in Seoul
Deoksugung Palace is famous for its elegant stone-wall road. Also, both Korean traditional palace style and western style buildings are all shown in the structures of the palace.
The name “Deoksugung” means “Palace of virtue and longevity” in the spirit of praying for
the long-living of Emperor Gojong.
Deoksugung is from Korea’s last dynasty, the Joseon Dynasty
(1392 - 1910). It lasted for years in the name of “Gyengungung”. King Gojong expanded
the size of it, and during the rule of Emperor Sunjong the name of the palace changed to “Deoksugung
Palace”. However, Korea was colonized by Japan, and under the colonial rule,
the palace was converted into a public park by Japan. The scale of it also
decreased to one-third its original size, and the number of buildings reduced
to just one-tenth.
